Start with work, not boxes
Organisation charts are useful, but structure design should begin with the work the organisation must perform. Clarify strategic priorities, core processes, decision rights, customer needs and critical capabilities before drawing new reporting lines.
Define accountability
Every role should have a clear purpose, key outputs, authority and relationships. Ambiguous accountability creates duplication, slow decisions and gaps that are often blamed on individual performance.
Test spans and layers
Consider management capacity, complexity, geographic reach and the level of coordination required. Too many layers can slow communication, while overly wide spans can weaken supervision and development.
Plan the transition
A new structure is not implemented when the organogram is approved. Job profiles, grading, placement, communication, systems and leadership behaviour must support the intended design.
